Thousands of years of human habitation, centuries of Marian prayer,
a great place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages.
The 2nd (site de France), in an extraordinary setting, it is reached
from Hospitalet (13 th c. chapel ) along the holy way which descends 150
meters into the Alzou canyon. at the lower level, the village street is
rich in history with its 14 th c. fortified gates, its ancient houses and
its Renaissance hotel de ville ( 15 th c., with Lurcat tapestries ).
By the pilgrim's stairway (216 steps) or by lift, the visitor arrives
at the mid-level, the ancient religious citadel. 7 chapels, the oft-restored
chapel of Our Lady (12 th c. Black Virgin and 9 th c.bell). Above the door
the "Durandel". 12 th and 13 th c. crypt and basilica, the Chapel
of St-Michael (with 12 th c. crypt frescoes on the exterior and 13 th c.
ones inside), museum of religious art treasures.
Crowning and defending the whole on the highest level, 14 th c. ramparts
from where the visitor may have a remarkable"aerialview" of the
town.
Valley of the Ouysse (14 th c. mill) and Alzou, rambler's walks, "grottes
des merveilles", son et lumiére, waxworks museum, crafts, stone
house, monkey forest, eagle park...
